Resolution refers to the number of pixels contained within the display matrix within which the pixels are laid out as a 2D grid. 4K or 4K resolution is called as such because there are approximately 4,000 pixels of horizontal resolution and 2,000 pixels of vertical resolution. To put into perspective, a Ful HD 1080p image is only 1920 x 1080. 4K resolution images approximately doubles the numbers in both directions, yielding about 8 million pixels, which is around four times your current 1080p set can display. In other words, you could fit all the pixels from your 1080p set onto one-quarter of a 4K screen.

The most significant value that 4K resolution can offer is that with the use of ever larger television screen sizes, as well as video projectors, it provides more detailed and less visible pixel images than 1080p. 4K resolution can deliver better-looking images as the screen gets larger. With greater number of pixels per inch, the image quality or resolution remains constant regardless of screen size.
